E. Dale Abel joined the University of Iowa as director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center and director of the Divsion of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Department of Internal Medicine in 2013. In 2016, he became chair of the department. During Abel’s time as director of the FOEDRC the center went from five initial members to over 110 today. More than 780 grants have been funded over 1,000 researchers over the years, compared to just 20 researchers on 10 grants in the cnter’s first year. Abel successfully recruited 16 new investigators, secured a new T32 training grant from the National Institute of Diabets and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and oversaw growth of the National Institutes of Health-funded research to $23.4 million in fiscal year 2020.

In January of 2022, Abel will become chair of the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He will also serve as executive medical director for the Department of Medicine in the UCLA Health System.

Details about interim appointments for the positions of chair/DEO of the Department of Internal Medicine and director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center will be shared at a later date.
